On Tuesday, high-level talks between Russia and the United States took place in the Saudi capital, Riyadh. The two delegations were led by Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and US Secretary of State Marco Rubio. Discussions included the resumption of diplomatic relations and the establishment of regular consultations on the crisis in Ukraine.
The recent high-level discussions between the United States and Russia held in Riyadh could mark a turning point in global affairs, impacting everything from nuclear proliferation to the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, according to Professor Eze Raphael Chukwuemezie, Professor of International Relations and Strategic Studies at Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Nigeria.

"The Riyadh talks between the US and Russia is a fundamental step toward resolving global challenges in the areas of non-proliferation of nuclear weapons, energy crisis, food shortage, hunger, and terrorism especially within the Middle-East and Africa," Prof. Chukwuemezie told Sputnik Africa, expressing optimism that the talks would yield positive outcomes, contributing to a more peaceful global landscape.

The expert pointed to the previous administration's imposition of sanctions on Russia across various sectors as an attempt to weaken its military capabilities and potentially facilitate regime change.
"With the coming on board of the Trump administration and its peaceful disposition towards its relationship with Russia, a golden era in US relationship with Russia would be achieved," he argued.

Crucially, Prof. Chukwuemezie argues that the talks significantly diminish Ukraine’s bargaining power. He contends that the current US administration, under President Trump, prioritizes a strong relationship with Russia.

"As a consequence, Ukraine stands no chance of a strong bargaining power in its negotiation with Russia, and the likelihood of Russia having her way is a good possibility, especially [if] Ukraine giving up the idea of joining the NATO alliance," Prof. Chukwuemezie said.

The professor outlined the potential benefits of successful US-Russia talks for broader international challenges. He suggested that joint efforts could stabilize the global energy market in influencing production quotas and pricing.
Moreover, he believes it could pave the way for enhanced economic cooperation by tackling trade imbalances and supporting developing economies through technology transfers and debt forgiveness.

"With the allies to both countries joining in this newfound relationship, global peace is inevitable. The world will gear up for the eradication of poverty, hunger, disease and international terrorism," Prof. Chukwuemezie noted.

Regarding Saudi Arabia's role, Professor Chukwuemezie highlighted the kingdom's established history as a mediator in international conflicts, including those involving Israel, Hamas, the US, and Iran. He sees Saudi Arabia's hosting of the talks as a testament to its growing influence in global diplomacy and its commitment to fostering peace.
