The Zimbabwean constitution restricts the presidency to two five-year terms, meaning Emmerson Mnangagwa's second and final term ends in 2028.
Zimbabwe's ruling Zanu-PF party will choose a new leader to lead both the party and the country when the president's term ends in 2028, President Emmerson Mnangagwa said.
Mnangagwa reiterated his commitment to the constitutionally mandated two-term limit, despite potential desires for an extension.
Regarding
efforts to extend his term to 2030 via constitutional amendments based on a Zanu PF resolution, Mnangagwa stated:
"I will persuade the persuaders not to persuade me so that I remain constitutional."
Earlier, Zimbabwe's ruling party, ZANU-PF, expressed a desire to extend President Emmerson Mnangagwa's term beyond 2028 by amending the constitution to postpone
elections until 2030, effectively granting him an additional two years in office without a referendum.
