The Gulf of Guinea, a vital 6,000 km shipping zone from Senegal to Angola, faces significant maritime security threats. Piracy, armed robbery, kidnapping, illegal fishing, smuggling, and transnational crime endanger the economic development of the entire region, affecting the numerous vessels that traverse its waters daily.
Nigerian President Bola Tinubu called on the African Union (AU) to establish a joint maritime task force to bolster security in the Gulf of Guinea, offering Lagos as its headquarters.
The announcement, made at the 38th AU Summit in Addis Ababa, is in line with Nigeria's commitment to provide strategic sea lift services for AU operations, including peace support, disaster response, and humanitarian missions.
Tinubu also welcomed the upgrading of Nigeria's counter-terrorism center to a regional one and the renewal of the Multinational Joint Task Force mandate in the Lake Chad region.
