As a significant beneficiary of US foreign aid, Nigeria received $1.02 billion in 2023, much of which was channeled through agencies such as USAID, according to reports from US media.
Nigeria earmarked $200 million in its 2025 budget to address funding gaps caused by the United States' suspension of foreign aid, according to a Senate document seen by a Western media outlet on Thursday.

Nigeria Reportedly Forms Committee to Address US Aid Freeze and Ensure Health Program Sustainability
Last week, the Nigerian government formed a committee to devise a transition and sustainability plan for health programs that were previously funded by USAID. This committee's mission is to secure alternative financing to maintain vital health initiatives, including those for HIV, tuberculosis, and malaria treatments.
This follows US President Donald Trump's decision to impose a 90-day freeze on most foreign aid, part of a broader review of assistance programs by his administration. In reaction, Nigeria’s Federal Executive Council has reportedly allocated $1 billion for healthcare reforms and earmarked additional funds specifically for HIV treatment packs.
