MOSCOW (Sputnik) - In late January, the Russian Foreign Ministry stated that Russia views Trump's intention to engage in direct communication with Moscow as "commendable." Despite this, Russia is not "deluding itself about the new, old president," Trump, and holds no illusions regarding him.
The first step in normalizing relations should be taken by the United States, but Moscow is ready to negotiate with Washington "in a tough bargaining mode," Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergey Ryabkov said on Wednesday.

"We are open to dialogue and ready to negotiate in a tough bargaining mode, taking into account the realities 'on the ground' and our national interests, predetermined by history and geography. So the decisions and choices are up to Donald Trump and his team," Ryabkov said in response to a media question posted on the website of the Russian Foreign Ministry.

Russia does not consider it necessary to negotiate with the United States "at any cost," the diplomat said, adding that Washington needs to take the first step.
