Chad convened the first session of its newly elected parliament on Tuesday. A total of 188 lawmakers were sworn in, with the session set to elect a parliamentary speaker and deputies. The December 2024 parliamentary elections resulted in a significant victory for the ruling Patriotic Salvation Movement, which secured 124 out of 188 seats, according to the Constitutional Council. The last parliamentary elections in Chad were held in 2011, and the legislative mandate, which was set to end in 2015, was extended multiple times due to financial constraints and COVID-19-related disruptions.Following the parliamentary session, President Deby reappointed Allamaye Halina as Chad’s prime minister. Halina had submitted his resignation earlier in the day, along with his cabinet, to allow for the formation of a new government. The parliamentary session comes after a three-year transition period led by President Mahamat Idriss Deby Itno, who assumed power in 2021 following the death of his father, Idriss Deby Itno, in combat. The president organized legislative, regional, and municipal elections on December 29, 2024, as part of the country's political transition.
Chad convened the first session of its newly elected parliament on Tuesday. A total of 188 lawmakers were sworn in, with the session set to elect a parliamentary speaker and deputies.
The December 2024 parliamentary elections resulted in a significant victory for the ruling Patriotic Salvation Movement, which secured
124 out of 188 seats, according to the Constitutional Council. The last parliamentary
elections in Chad were held in 2011, and the legislative mandate, which was set to end in 2015, was extended multiple times due to financial constraints and COVID-19-related disruptions.
Following the parliamentary session, President Deby reappointed Allamaye Halina as Chad’s prime minister. Halina had submitted his resignation earlier in the day, along with his cabinet, to allow for the formation of a new government. A diplomat and former state protocol director-general, Halina had initially been appointed as prime minister in May 2024. He will now be responsible for forming a new government.
