Interim President of Mali, Assimi Goïta, who currently serves as chairman of the AES, announced that AES countries would introduce biometric passports for the movement of persons within the association starting January 29. This initiative aims to harmonize travel documents in the AES and facilitate the movement of citizens among its member states.

Citizens of the Alliance of Sahel States are encouraged to replace their current passports with the new AES document. However, the old passports with the ECOWAS logo will remain valid until their expiration date.
