While Burkina Faso, Mali and Niger officially left the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) on Wednesday, a Nigerien socio-economic and political analyst Issoufou Boubacar Kado Magagi told Sputnik Africa that he sees a great future for the three West African countries united in the Alliance of Sahel States (AES), which can potentially supplant the ECOWAS."This final 'divorce' is taking place amicably," and through diplomatic channels, the speaker emphasized. On the other hand, ECOWAS "is now in danger of disintegrating because of the interference in its internal affairs by the countries of the European Union, especially France," he noted. The AES countries will not sever their relations with ECOWAS "because the peoples are bound by age-old fraternal and economic ties that date back to pre-colonial times," the analyst concluded. On January 28, 2024, Mali, Burkina Faso and Niger decided to withdraw from ECOWAS following the creation of the Alliance of Sahel States.

Tuesday marked exactly one year since Burkina Faso, Mali and Niger announced their decision to leave ECOWAS in 2024, and on Wednesday the three countries officially withdrew from the community.
While Burkina Faso, Mali and Niger officially left the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) on Wednesday, a Nigerien socio-economic and political analyst
Issoufou Boubacar Kado Magagi told
Sputnik Africa that he sees a great future for the three West African countries
united in the Alliance of Sahel States (AES), which can potentially supplant the ECOWAS.
"There is talk of Chad joining the Alliance. Togo has announced its intention to enter it. Others tell us that Ghana is also interested," Magagi pointed out.
"This final 'divorce' is taking place amicably," and through diplomatic channels, the speaker emphasized.
On the other hand, ECOWAS "is now in danger of disintegrating because of the interference in its internal affairs by the countries of the European Union, especially France," he noted.
The AES countries will not sever their
relations with ECOWAS "because the peoples are bound by age-old fraternal and economic ties that date back to pre-colonial times," the analyst concluded.
On January 28, 2024, Mali, Burkina Faso and Niger decided to withdraw from ECOWAS following the creation of the Alliance of Sahel States.
