BRICS is an intergovernmental organization established in 2006. Russia's 2024 presidency of BRICS began with the joining of new members. Adding to Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa, it now includes Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, Indonesia, the UAE and Saudi Arabia; the latter has not formalized membership but participates in BRICS meetings.
The expansion of the BRICS following the 2024 summit in Russia has shown the main direction of global development, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said at the meeting on January 30.
According to him, this expansion is due to the growing awareness by key states in the Eurasian continent, Africa and Latin America of the role they play in the world.
The minister emphasized that the balance of power on the international stage has changed in the past four years.
"The geopolitical division that is taking place today is not between the West and Russia, but between the Western minority and the global majority," Lavrov said.
Under the new administration in Washington, he said, the United States is targeting almost any other country that pursues an independent and sovereign policy.
