Amid rising tensions, Algerian Parliament Speaker Ibrahim Boughali called for a law criminalizing French colonialism. He pointed to "repeated French attacks" that aim to harm Algeria's image. Boughali urged the parliament to approve the draft law, saying that current circumstances demand a response to the actions of France during its 132-year colonial rule between 1830 and 1962.This is the first time a senior Algerian official publicly called for criminalization of the colonial period. The law, which was initially drafted in 2006 in response to a French law on the "positive aspects of colonialism," reached the speaker's office but still needs further changes before it can be submitted for parliamentary review.Boughali argued that the current crisis between Algeria and France requires addressing colonial accountability. He emphasized that the proposed legislation reflects the will of the Algerian people, not just a political faction.Boughali pointed out that while President Abdelmadjid Tebboune approached relations with France with "wisdom and pragmatism," based on mutual respect, France failed to show a genuine commitment to strengthening ties. He cited historical evidence of France's lack of cooperation.
