On Monday, French President Emmanuel Macron claimed that Algeria was "dishonoring itself" by detaining French-Algerian writer Boualem Sansal, who was arrested by police in the capital Algiers several weeks ago.
French President Emmanuel Macron's remarks on the detention of writer Boualem Sansal in Algeria constitute interference in the North African country's internal affairs, according to the Algerian Foreign Ministry.
The day before, Macron called on Algeria to release writer Boualem Sansal, a French-Algerian citizen, saying the African country was "dishonoring" itself by depriving him of his freedom.

"The Algerian Government has taken notice, with much astonishment, the words of the French president with regard to Algeria [...] These words can only be forsaken, rejected, and condemned for what they are: interference is brazen and unacceptable in a domestic case in Algeria," the Algerian Foreign Ministry said in a statement.
