The protests were reportedly fueled by escalating violence in the eastern DRC, where rebel forces have intensified attacks, supposedly with military backing from Rwanda. DRC President Condemns International Agencies' Inaction Amid Violence in Country
10:31 30.01.2025 (Updated: 11:56 30.01.2025) MOSCOW (Sputnik) - The Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) President Felix Tshisekedi has condemned international organizations' inaction amid clashes between the country's forces and the M23 rebel group.
On Tuesday, media reported widespread demonstrations in Kinshasa, with protesters attacking the
embassies of the United States, France, the Netherlands, Belgium, Rwanda, and Uganda. The protests were reportedly fueled by escalating violence in the eastern DRC, where rebel forces have intensified attacks, supposedly with military backing from Rwanda.
"Your silence and inaction in the face of the Kigali regime and atrocities committed by its supporters on our territories are insults not only to the Democratic Republic of Congo but also to the common human values of peace and justice," Tshisekedi said during his address to the nation.
He also said that the inaction of international organizations "borders with complicity" in the aggression against the DRC, which will not let itself be degraded and will continue fighting back.
Tshisekedi also called on the nation to unite efforts to repel the "barbaric aggression of Rwanda."
"I call on the entire nation, men and women, young and old, politicians, businessmen, civil society, religious denominations, artists, and athletes to unite, to collectively support the Armed Forces of the DRC, and to contribute to repelling the barbaric aggression of Rwanda," the president is quoted by the portal Actualite. "Every young Congolese ready to defend the country will find a place in the ranks of the DRC armed forces. Enlist in the army en masse! The DRC will never surrender. I will never abandon you, I swear."
The president condemned the capture of the city of Goma in the eastern part of the country by the M23 rebels with the support of
Rwanda, which he accused of "violating the UN Charter," confirming the presence of Rwandan troops on the territory of the DRC.
After the failure of Angolan mediation efforts, the M23 anti-government armed group has resumed an offensive in the eastern DRC in recent weeks. The Congolese authorities accuse neighboring Rwanda of supporting the rebels and urge it to withdraw its troops from the country. Rwanda has denied all the accusations. The most severe clashes are being waged in the province of
North Kivu, namely in Goma.
