Despite their departure, ECOWAS has emphasized its commitment to maintaining regional solidarity and minimizing disruption to the lives and livelihoods of citizens across member states.
The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has officially confirmed the withdrawal of Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger from the regional bloc, effective Wednesday.
"The withdrawal of Burkina Faso, the Republic of Mali and the Republic of Niger from ECOWAS has become effective today," the statement read. "This message is necessary to avoid confusion and disruption in the lives and businesses of our people during this transition period."
In a
statement released on Wednesday, ECOWAS outlined several transitional measures to ensure continuity during this period of change. The organization has requested that all relevant authorities within and outside ECOWAS Member States recognize
national passports and identity cards bearing the ECOWAS logo held by citizens of Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger "until further notice."
Additionally, goods and services from the three countries will continue to be treated in accordance with the ECOWAS Trade Liberalization Scheme and investment policy. Citizens of the affected nations will also retain their right to
visa-free movement, residence, and establishment under ECOWAS protocols.
The statement further called for "full support and cooperation" to
ECOWAS officials from Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger as they carry out their assignments for the community. These arrangements are intended to remain in place until the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government determines the modalities for future engagement with the three countries. To facilitate this process, the ECOWAS Commission has established a dedicated structure to engage in discussions with each of the departing nations.
On January 28, 2024, Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger decided to withdraw from ECOWAS. Earlier, they formed the Alliance of Sahel States, and subsequently, the Confederation of Sahel States, with the aim to "create an African space of sovereignty in the areas of security, politics, geostrategy, and economics."
