Earlier, Iba Karim, a former Burkinabe lawmaker, told Sputnik Africa that the standardized documents within AES could simplify customs formalities and reduce border control formalities, promoting increased mobility of citizens and goods along with strengthening intra-confederal trade.
Alliance of Sahel States (AES) countries to introduce biometric passports for the movement of persons within the association from January 29, Interim President of Mali Assimi Goïta, who currently serves as chairman of the AES, said.
As noted, old passports also remain valid until their expiration date. However, citizens of the three countries, Mali, Niger and Burkina Faso, will be able to exchange them for documents of a new type, which will have "AES" written on them instead of "ECOWAS."
