In line with the instructions of Niger's President Abdourahamane Tiani, the names of the Nigerien national heroes replaced names inherited from the colonial past as part of the process of restoring sovereignty and reconstructing the country, the head of Nigerien capital's administration stated.
Several streets in Niger's capital, Niamey, got rid of their
colonial-era names and were renamed after national heroes, Niamey administration's head Colonel Boubacar Suman Garanke told reporters at the renaming ceremony held on Sunday.
"In accordance with the instructions of the president of the National Council for the Safeguard of the Homeland (CNSP), the Head of State Abdourahamane Tiani, today we've named four avenues and a square," the head of the administration said.
The following places changed their names:
Avenue François Mitterrand, former president of France, was renamed Avenue Boubou Hama;
Avenue Jules Brevier, former Minister of Colonial Affairs, became Avenue Dan Koulodo;
The intersection of the streets of the Libyan and French embassies became Zancen Kassa Square;
The Avenue of President Karl Casten became Avenue Morou Karma.
Sunday's event was not the first of its kind, as, for example, in October 2024, Niger's authorities in the capital Niamey
also renamed several historical sites whose names were reminiscent of France amid a widespread anti-French movement in the former colonies.
