The chronic humanitarian crisis is being exacerbated by the ongoing conflict between the Congolese army and the M23, which Kinshasa accuses of being bolstered by thousands of Rwandan troops.
Deadly clashes in eastern DRC have escalated, prompting an emergency meeting of the UN Security Council originally scheduled for Monday to be moved up to Sunday.
Since 2021, the M23 group has seized large territories of the resource-rich eastern DRC region, displacing thousands and fueling a humanitarian crisis. Their recent advance towards Goma, a city of over one million, follows the collapse of peace talks between the DRC and Rwanda in December.
Tragically, 13 UN and SADC peacekeepers, including nine South Africans, three Malawians, and one Uruguayan, were killed in the fighting on Saturday, according to the countries' authorities.
The UN's MONUSCO mission, with approximately 15,000 peacekeepers in the DRC, confirmed its forces are engaged in heavy combat against M23 positions.

In December, an Angolan-brokered peace summit collapsed after Rwanda reportedly demanded direct talks between the DRC and the M23 – a demand Kinshasa rejected, further complicating the situation.
