On Friday, the M23 rebel group took control of the strategically significant village of Katale in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo following fierce battles, as reported by local media. The capture of Katale provided the rebels with a direct route to Masisi, the administrative center of the district.
M23 rebels have seized control of Masisi, the administrative capital of Masisi territory in eastern DR Congo. Known for its rich agricultural and mineral wealth, the town of 40,000 residents fell after intense clashes that forced government forces and allied militias to retreat, according to local media reports.
The capture of Masisi, following the takeover of Lushebere in the same district, has triggered mass displacements, with civilians fleeing in fear of rebel violence. Many have sought refuge in hospitals, parishes, or nearby areas, while injuries among civilians have been reported.

M23 Rebel Fighters Reportedly Seize Pivotal Settlement in Eastern Part of DR Congo
The Okapi radio station highlighted that Masisi’s fall positions M23 for a potential advance on Goma, the North Kivu provincial capital, just 80 km away and home to over 2 million people.
Alexis Bahunga, a provincial deputy, described the situation to a Western media outlet as a "serious humanitarian crisis" and urged the Congolese government to strengthen the operational capacity of its army, FARDC. Meanwhile, M23 rebels held a meeting in a local parish, asserting that their actions are intended to "liberate the country," even as the crisis continues to disrupt countless lives.
