The devastating conflict between the Sudanese army and the rebel paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF), led by former deputy chairman of the ruling Sovereign Council Mohammed Hamdan Dagalo, has caused tens of thousands of deaths, displaced millions, and triggered a severe humanitarian crisis.
In a significant display of strength, Sudanese army chief General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan visited the armed forces' headquarters in central Khartoum on Sunday. This marked his first visit since government forces broke the months-long siege imposed by the rebel Rapid Support Forces.
Surrounded by senior military leaders, al-Burhan commended the "resilience and sacrifices" of the soldiers who defended the General Command for 20 months. He vowed to "eradicate" the RSF and pursue its fighters relentlessly throughout Sudan.
Al-Burhan also praised ongoing army operations in other parts of the country, including Khartoum's twin cities, Omdurman and Bahri, and El Fasher in western Sudan, where intense fighting continues.

Saudi Arabia, Other Gulf States Condemn Deadly RSF Drone Attack on Saudi-Run Hospital in Sudan
The General Command had been under RSF siege since the conflict began in April 2023. The army's announcement on Friday that it had lifted the blockade and regained control of parts of Khartoum signaled a possible shift in the nearly two-year war, a claim the RSF dismissed as "propaganda."
Al-Burhan's visit to the headquarters aimed to demonstrate the army's renewed control over this strategic site. Adding to the RSF's challenges, an advisor to the RSF leader resigned on Friday, citing the paramilitary group's targeting of civilians.
On Saturday, following a recent RSF drone attack on a Saudi-run hospital in El Fasher, North Darfur – the only functioning medical facility in the regional capital – the World Health Organization chief called for an end to attacks on healthcare. Both Saudi Arabia and the Gulf Cooperation Council have also condemned the hospital attack.
