Togo Could Say 'Yes' to Joining AES, Country's Foreign Minister Says

In September 2023, Burkina Faso, Niger, and Mali formed the AES to strengthen their collaborative security measures and promote socioeconomic progress for their people. In May 2024, the nations endorsed a preliminary agreement outlining the establishment of a confederation.
The possibility of Togo integrating into the Alliance of Sahel States (AES) is not excluded, stated Robert Dussey, Togolese Minister of Foreign Affairs.
"It is the decision of the president of the republic, but it is not impossible," he told Voxafrica on January 16.
The minister also deplored the lack of genuine sovereignty on the continent, saying that "Africa is only used to serve the great powers, and this is not normal." Furthermore, the rise to power of Assimi Goïta in Mali "is an opportunity" for that Sahelian country, he added.
