The Kenyan President William Ruto's call for political leaders not to spread violence among the youth contrasts with recent statements by the former President Uhuru Kenyatta that the youth must fight for their rights, no matter the cost.
On Sunday, Kenyan President William Ruto criticized political leaders for inciting youth violence and urged them to focus on creating opportunities for the young generation instead.
"Our young people deserve the best from us. Let us not pit our children against each other. […] These young Kenyans do not need violence or confrontation. They want opportunities, jobs to engage in business, and that is what we should be doing as leaders," Ruto said at the church service in Bungoma County in Western Kenya.
Instead of inciting young Kenyans to violence, destruction, and chaos, the political leaders need to provide solutions that address the youth's challenges, the president noted.
Kenya's top official emphasized his government's commitment to providing job opportunities in various sectors and encouraged young people to participate in these programs.
"Do not worry about those hurling insults because they do not have an alternative plan. But Kenya will move forward. You can take that assurance from me," he stated.
Last Friday, the fourth Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta reportedly criticized the younger generation for being afraid to confront social challenges and defend their rights.
"The problem today is fear. Generation Z is the future; fight for your rights. Don't just sit there while others take what belongs to you. [...] Everything is worth fighting for. If it’s taken from you, let no one complain. Stand up for what’s yours. We are behind you," local media quoted the former leader as saying at his cousin's funeral.
