The authorities in Niamey face serious security challenges. The areas of Niger bordering Burkina Faso, Mali and Nigeria have been areas of high activity for extremist and terrorist groups in recent years, with militants attacking both military personnel, security forces and civilians.
The Alliance of Sahel States (AES), created by Mali, Niger, and Burkina Faso in 2023, was welcome because the bandits operated across the three countries, and that combining the three states' forces, intelligence, energy, and resources would lead to their success, Amadou Harouna Maiga, the coordinator of the Tillabéri Union Committee, told Sputnik Africa regarding the 2024 security report.
In 2025, Niger's National Council for the Safeguard of the Homeland should prioritize security, the Nigerien expert hoped.

Amadou Harouna Maiga stated that the overall security situation in the Sahel in 2024 was similar to that of 2023. He noted that in the Nigerien region of Tillabéri, insecurity had taken root. However, he added that there had been an improvement in other regions, notably Maradi and Tahoua, where the terrorist group Boko Haram had suffered significant losses, leading to a lull in violence in those areas.
