It takes NATO one year to produce the equivalent of the military equipment Russia is producing in three months, NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte said on Monday. The NATO secretary general and the European lawmakers discussed the security situation in Europe and EU-NATO cooperation.Furthermore, Rutte said that NATO without the United States would be an "illusion," as the member states would have to spend up to 10% of their respective GDPs on defense in this case.US President-elect Donald Trump said that NATO countries should spend 5% of GDP on defense during a press conference earlier in January.NATO countries agreed at a summit in Vilnius in 2023 to spend at least 2% of GDP on defense. Currently, 23 of NATO's 32 members spend 2% or more of their GDP on defense.

NATO Needs One Year to Produce Equivalent of Weapons Russia Produces in Three Months, Sec. Gen. Says
10:37 14.01.2025 (Updated: 12:12 14.01.2025) MOSCOW (Sputnik) - NATO Secretary General Rutte met with members of the AFET and the SEDE, as well as with the Delegation for Relations with the NATO Parliamentary Assembly. It was his first official visit to the European Parliament since taking office on October 1, 2024.
It takes NATO one year to produce the equivalent of the
military equipment Russia is producing in three months, NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte said on Monday.
"When you look on what Russia has produced [in terms of military equipment] now in three months, it’s what all of NATO is producing from Los Angeles up to Ankara in a full year," Rutte said during a meeting of the European Parliament's Committee on Foreign Affairs (AFET) and the Subcommittee on Security and Defense (SEDE) in Brussels.
The
NATO secretary general and the European lawmakers discussed the security situation in Europe and EU-NATO cooperation.
Furthermore, Rutte said that NATO without the United States would be an "illusion," as the member states would have to spend up to 10% of their respective GDPs on defense in this case.
"On the more autonomous European defense, it is great to have a European NATO, but then forget about the 2% [in defense spending], then you have to bring it up to 8, 9 or 10%. You have to build your own nuclear capability, and it will take 15, 20 years if you want to build a European NATO without the US. At this moment, the US is spending over 60% of all the money being spent within NATO territory ... It is an illusion that you can build a European NATO over the next 15 or 20 years," he said.
US President-elect Donald
Trump said that NATO countries should spend 5% of GDP on defense during a press conference earlier in January.
NATO countries agreed at a summit in Vilnius in 2023 to spend at least 2% of GDP on defense. Currently, 23 of NATO's 32 members spend 2% or more of their GDP on defense.
