Sputnik Africa has compiled a list of the main Russian air defense systems deployed across the continent, illustrating the depth of military-technical ties between Russia and Africa.
Russia’s military-technical cooperation with Africa dates back to the era of the continent's struggle for independence and the Cold War, when the Soviet Union supplied weapons to support liberation movements and bolster friendly regimes. This collaboration laid the foundation for continued military-technical partnerships between Russia and numerous African states.
Today, Russia is one of the key suppliers of advanced air defense systems to Africa, helping countries strengthen their defense capabilities against diverse threats such as terrorism, regional instability, and external aggression.
African nations have adopted a variety of Russian air defense systems over the past years, which cater to their unique security needs. These include long-range, medium-range, and short-range systems, alongside self-propelled anti-aircraft weapons. Notable users include Egypt, Algeria, Ethiopia, and others who leverage these systems to protect their airspace and deter aggression. Below is an overview of key systems currently in use across the continent:
Tor Air Defense System
The Tor system is a mobile, all-weather, low- to medium-altitude, short-range surface-to-air missile system designed to intercept aircraft, cruise missiles, and UAVs. Egypt, for example, operates the Tor-M1 and Tor-M2 variants, with 16 units currently in service. These systems are highly valued for their ability to defend critical infrastructure and battlefield positions.

Buk Air Defense System
The Buk is a medium-range surface-to-air missile system capable of engaging cruise missiles, UAVs, and ballistic missiles. With its proven battlefield performance, the Buk is a vital component of air defense strategies, particularly in regions where comprehensive coverage is required.

The S-300 system is a long-range, high-altitude air defense platform designed to counter aircraft and ballistic missiles. Ethiopia and Egypt are among the African nations equipped with this system. Ethiopia reportedly uses the S-300PMU1 variant, while Egypt operates the S-300VM (SA-23) variant, with four battalions delivered in 2015. These systems provide a strategic shield against high-level threats.
