Amid growing calls for a Pan-African security force, the vision of a unified defense system to tackle the continent's security challenges is gaining traction. In this episode of Global South Pole, we explore the prospects and complexities of this transformative initiative with insights from a leading security expert.
The concept of a Pan-African Defense Force aligns closely with the vision of African unity and collective security outlined in the African Union Charter and Agenda 2063, Dr. Legend Asuelime, a security and development studies expert and research associate at the University of Johannesburg, tells Sputnik Africa.
The security expert stresses that the establishment of such a force would be a significant step towards enabling the continent to address its security challenges independently, with the ultimate aim of reducing dependence on external powers.

“I see it as a symbol of unity because Pan-African Defense Force could symbolize collective commitment to safeguarding the continent from common threats, including terrorism, cross-border conflicts and external interference. And secondly, I think the regional security because these forces will be instrumental in stabilizing the fragile states and mediating conflicts, as well as in promoting peace-building initiatives. The third that I would say is self-reliance,” Dr. Asuelime says.

Russia Successfully tests the Oreshnik Ballistic Missile

Following Ukraine's use of long-range US and UK-supplied missiles to attack Russian territory, Russia has successfully tested its advanced Oreshnik ballistic missiles against military targets in Ukraine. Reacting to the development, Dr. Godian Njoku, a Nigerian expert on policy, security, and peace-building, describes it as a calculated response that reflects Russia's strategic approach to defending its sovereignty and addressing escalating threats.

“They [Russia] need to show these Western countries that, yes, we can react to this, and we have what it takes to react to this. This act, what Russia has done, serves us as both a deterrent and a message, especially to US, that Russia has the military capabilities,” Dr. Njoku explains.

The expert notes that the missile's advanced targeting capabilities allow it to hit strategically important targets, such as defense industrial facilities in Ukraine, with high precision.

“It means that this weapon is one of its kind. It has never been used before. And this is something that has advanced precision and targeting. So this capability means that the missile effectiveness in disabling critical infrastructures cannot be swept out under the carpet. Secondly, I believe the capabilities, the medium-range require, the classification as the medium-range missile of Oreshnik means that it can target areas at significant distance from what you've read. It can potentially get to maybe more than 1000 to 2000 km, broadening the scope of Russia's strike capabilities; it can cause a lot of damage to infrastructures. It can hit multiple targets. And this is a game changer in the conflict. Thirdly, I would say that is technological sophistication,” he stresses.
