In late December 2024, the UNSC extended the MONUSCO peacekeeping mission in the DRC for a year, delaying its planned withdrawal. Nearly 11,000 peacekeepers will remain until at least December 2025, concentrating on the volatile eastern region where various rebel groups are active. Kinshasa cited security concerns as reasons for the extension.
The M23 rebel group has captured the strategically important village of Katale in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) after intense fighting, according to local radio station Okapi.
With Katale's fall, the rebels now have a direct route to the district's administrative center, the town of Masisi, the station highlighted.
