Argentina Reiterates Claim to Falkland Islands on Anniversary of UK Sovereignty
BUENOS AIRES (Sputnik) - Argentina and the UK have had a long-standing dispute over the Falkland Islands' sovereignty. In 1982, they fought a war, which resulted in Argentina's defeat. A 2013 referendum saw the islands vote 99.8% to remain a UK territory, but Argentina does not recognize this outcome.
Argentina continues to insist on its sovereignty over the Falkland Islands, which it calls the Malvinas and considers occupied by the
UK since 1833, the Argentinian Foreign Ministry said on Friday.
"On 3 January 1833, the Malvinas Islands were illegally occupied by British forces, who expelled the Argentine population and authorities legitimately established there, replacing them with British subjects … This action by the British government constituted use of force in times of peace that was contrary to international law," the ministry said.
The Argentine government is ready to begin bilateral
negotiations that will help find a solution to the sovereignty dispute and is interested in constructive relations with the UK not only regarding the islands but also on other issues, the ministry said.
"The Argentine government and people reaffirm once again, 192 years after the illegal occupation of the Malvinas Islands, their legitimate and imprescriptible sovereignty rights over the Malvinas, South Georgias and South Sandwich Islands and the surrounding maritime areas," the statement said.
