In May, Senegal's prime minister said that the nation's desire to chart its own course conflicted with the longstanding presence of foreign military bases on its soil. Later, in November, President Bassirou Diomaye Faye emphasized to a Western news outlet that the presence of French military bases undermines the country's sovereignty.
Senegal's Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko
announced the decision to close all foreign military bases in the republic's territory.
He made this statement in a policy speech to parliament, outlining the government's strategy until 2050.
"The government has decided to close all foreign military bases on Senegalese territory," Sonko stated. "This decision reflects our determination to strengthen national sovereignty and reorient the country's defense policy."
The prime minister clarified that this step was taken at the initiative of the
Senegalese president.There are three
French military facilities located in Dakar, with approximately 300 military personnel stationed there.
