On Monday, the Constitutional Court confirmed that the ruling FRELIMO party's candidate, Daniel Chapo, won the October 9 presidential election, sparking renewed unrest by supporters of exiled opposition leader Venancio Mondlane. The violence led to at least 21 deaths, including two police officers, according to Interior Minister Pascoal Ronda.
Mozambique's President-elect, Daniel Chapo, has outlined his vision to restore stability and investor confidence in the wake of nationwide unrest following the October elections. Speaking to a Western media outlet hours after the Constitutional Court confirmed his victory with 65.17% of the vote, Chapo emphasized the need for
reconciliation and dialogue.“I am launching a national-reconciliation and dialogue initiative,” Chapo announced, adding that the talks will include political leaders, civil society, and communities to address grievances and build trust.
While opposition leader Venancio Mondlane continues to dispute the election results and orchestrate protests, Chapo plans to engage in dialogue with political stakeholders after his January 15 inauguration.
Chapo acknowledged the unrest's impact on the economy, including disruptions to
mining and a $20 billion gas export project. To reassure investors, he committed to policy and legal stability.
“Mozambique remains a land of immense opportunity. It is very important to maintain the contract situation with these companies,” he was quoted as saying.
On addressing underlying issues, Chapo pledged to strengthen police training, uphold
human rights, and create jobs to tackle the economic frustrations fueling the unrest. He also prioritized electoral reforms, calling for an independent electoral commission aligned with international best practices to rebuild trust in the voting process.
