Nigeria lifted a five-year ban on mining exploration in its northwestern state of Zamfara, rich in gold, lithium, and copper, citing improved security. The ban, imposed in 2019 due to bandit attacks, had led to rampant illegal mining, according to the country's Minister of Solid Minerals, Dele Alake. To boost the mining sector, which currently contributes less than 1% of GDP, Nigeria is implementing reforms including revoking unused licenses, attracting investors with a stake in a new national company, and restricting mineral exports.Nigeria is also seeking technical and financial support through international partnerships to enhance the sector's capacity.
