Nigeria lifted a five-year ban on mining exploration in its northwestern state of Zamfara, rich in gold, lithium, and copper, citing improved security.

The ban, imposed in 2019 due to bandit attacks, had led to rampant illegal mining, according to the country's Minister of Solid Minerals, Dele Alake.

"The security operatives' giant strides have led to a notable reduction in the level of insecurity, and with the ban on exploration lifted, Zamfara’s mining sector can gradually begin contributing to the nation’s revenue pool," he stated.
