Ethiopia and Uganda share a complex and multifaceted relationship, marked by periods of both cooperation and tension. Both countries have collaborated on regional security issues, particularly concerning the Horn of Africa.
A meeting between Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed and General Muhoozi Kainerugaba, Chief of Staff of the
Ugandan People's Defense Forces (UPDF), took place this morning at the Prime Minister's office.
The meeting also included Field Marshal Birhanu Jula, Chief of Staff of the Ethiopian National Defense Forces (ENDF).
General Kainerugaba, son of Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni, is in Addis Ababa for a
working visit at the invitation of Field Marshal Birhanu Jula.
"I thank my beloved brother, Field Marshal Birhanu Jula, for the invitation to visit my ancestral home, Ethiopia. Uganda and Ethiopia are blood brothers who can never be separated," Kainerugaba said in a statement on social media upon his arrival in Addis Ababa on Saturday.
On Saturday, Ethiopian Field Marshal Jula and General Kainerugaba discussed strengthening bilateral
defense cooperation, and exploring avenues for further collaboration, Ethiopian state media reported.
In February, Ethiopia and Uganda signed a memorandum of understanding enhancing military cooperation, including information sharing, capacity building, peacekeeping, and regional security.
