Guinea is ruled by the military, which in September 2021 deposed President Alpha Condé. They established the National Cohesion and Development Committee as the highest governing body and replaced the constitution with a Transitional Charter. A month later, Mamady Doumbouya was elected transitional president.
Guinea's transition period will not end on December 31, as originally planned by the military that seized power in the country, said Ousmane Gaoual Diallo, Minister of Transport, official representative of the Government of Guinea.
The transitional charter didn't specify the conditions for ending the
transition period. However, it did mention that the restoration of the state was part of the process, and this stage was still in progress, the minister said.
Guinea is currently discussing a draft of the country's new constitution. It is expected that it will be submitted to a national referendum in the very near future. Guinea's transitional Prime Minister Amadou Oury Bah said that the
draft constitution allows the current head of state Mamady Doumbouya to stand as a candidate in the upcoming presidential elections.
Following the 2021 coup, Guinea's military government, led by Doumbouya, initially planned to restore civilian rule via elections by the end of 2024, as per an agreement with ECOWAS.
