On Sunday, Syrian armed groups took control of Damascus, the capital. Reports on Tuesday indicated that the Syrian opposition granted Mohammed al-Bashir, leader of the "salvation government" established by opposition forces, the authority to form an interim government in the country.
The transitional period in Syria presents a mix of challenges and opportunities, according to Anas al-Abda, a member of the Syrian Coalition's political body. Speaking with Sputnik, he emphasized the coalition's commitment to navigating this critical phase in line with UN Resolution 2254, which outlines the framework for Syria’s political solution.

“The transitional phase in the country is full of challenges and risks, but it also presents many opportunities. Therefore, we have clearly stated our commitment to UN Resolution 2254, which outlines the political solution in Syria, the transitional period, and its timeframe,” al-Abda stated.

Central to this process is the establishment of a transitional body. This entity will take on the responsibility of stabilizing the country, drafting a new constitution, and preparing the groundwork for free elections.
“This phase will begin with the formation of a transitional body tasked with protecting state institutions, maintaining order, drafting a new constitution to serve as a social contract for the Syrian people, and submitting it to a referendum,” he explained.
Following the approval of the constitution, democratic elections will mark the conclusion of the transitional phase and the beginning of a permanent political system, according to the politician.

However, al-Abda did not shy away from addressing external threats and challenges that could hinder this transition. He strongly condemned Israel’s recent actions, calling for international accountability.

“We condemn Israel's recent actions against Syria and emphasize that Tel Aviv's attacks on our country are unjustifiable. Any state that attempts to exploit the ongoing political transformations in the republic should be condemned,” he said.

Rebuilding Syria after years of conflict is another pressing issue. Al-Abda highlighted the devastating toll the war has taken on the nation’s infrastructure and people.

“More than half of the Syrian population has been displaced, over 80% of homes have been destroyed, and 70% of the infrastructure has been obliterated. It will take years not only to restore private or state property, but also to rebuild Syrian society as a whole,” the speaker said.

Looking forward, al-Abda stressed the importance of fostering positive international relations.

“Syria aims to have more friends and fewer enemies. Good relations are needed with both the West and the East, and of course, the Syrian government must build new and positive relations with Russia based on the common interests of both nations,” he concluded.
