Tensions between Ethiopia and Somalia rose after Ethiopia and the Somali breakaway region of Somaliland signed an agreement granting Ethiopia access to the Red Sea in exchange for recognizing Somaliland as an independent state, drawing condemnation from Somalia.
The African Union Transition Mission in Somalia (ATMIS) has welcomed the Turkish-brokered peace agreement between Mogadishu and Addis Ababa, following
months of tension between the two East African neighbors.
The Special Representative of the Chairperson of the African Union Commission for Somalia and Head of the African Union Transitional Mission in Somalia (ATMIS), Mohamed El-Amine Souef, described the Somali-Ethiopian agreement as an exemplary act of leadership that is critical to advancing regional peace.
"ATMIS remains fully committed to supporting Somalia's state-building and security transition, in line with the aspirations of the Somali people and the African Union's vision for a stable and prosperous Africa," Souef said in a statement, calling on both sides to implement the agreed measures and further strengthen mutual cooperation.
In a joint statement issued in Ankara on Wednesday, Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed and Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud reaffirmed their mutual commitment to the sovereignty, unity, independence and territorial integrity of both states.
The two sides also agreed to work together to finalize arrangements that will
allow landlocked Ethiopia access to the Red Sea.
