Daesh Strengthens Positions in Syria Amid Chaos in Country, Kurdish General Says
09:04 12.12.2024 (Updated: 10:18 12.12.2024) MOSCOW (Sputnik) - The US-backed Kurdish Syrian Democratic Forces continue to control prisons for members of the Daesh (aka ISIS) group and their families in Syria, Pentagon deputy spokeswoman Sabrina Singh said Wednesday.
The Daesh* terrorist group has
strengthened its positions in Syria amid chaos in the country after armed opposition came to power, General Abdi Mazloum of the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) has said.
"Daesh is now stronger in the Syrian Desert. Previously, they were in remote areas and hiding, but now they have greater freedom of movement since they face no issues with other groups and are not engaged in conflict with them," Mazloum told Sky News.
He added that Daesh activity had also increased in areas controlled by the SDF.
"Just a few days ago, three members of the Internal Security Forces were killed near al Hassakah in a Daesh operation," Mazloum said.
Syrian armed groups
captured the capital of Damascus on Sunday. Syrian Prime Minister Mohammad Ghazi al-Jalali said that he and 18 other ministers had decided to remain in Damascus. Al-Jalali also said he was in contact with the leaders of militant groups that had entered the city. The Russian Foreign Ministry said that President Bashar al-Assad had stepped down and left Syria after negotiations with some participants of the Syrian conflict.
