08:30 10.12.2024 (Updated: 09:07 12.12.2024) MOSCOW (Sputnik) - US Senator Rand Paul called on the US authorities to immediately withdraw American forces from Syria.
"Bring our troops home! The war pits Islamists against socialist Kurds against Iranian proxies. Not our fight. 900 US troops scattered about Syria are a target, not a deterrent," Paul said on X.
Earlier, Deputy Pentagon Press Secretary Sabrina Singh told reporters that the
United States does not plan to expand its military presence in Syria, including temporarily, amid the change of power in that country.
"Force posture remains the same. As you know, our forces have remained on a heightened level, but there's, you know, not tracking any changes or, you know, changes that the commander has made or requested," Singh said at a closed briefing, answering a relevant question.
The US State Department also previously said that Washington did not foresee the possibility of the fall of Bashar al-Assad's government.
Syrian armed opposition groups captured Damascus on Sunday. Syrian Prime Minister Mohammad Ghazi al-Jalali said that he and 18 other ministers had decided to remain in the capital. Al-Jalali also said he was in contact with the leaders of
militant groups that had entered the city. The Russian Foreign Ministry said that Syrian President Bashar al-Assad had stepped down and left Syria after negotiations with some participants in the Syrian conflict.
On Sunday, a source in the Kremlin told
Sputnik that al-Assad and members of his family had arrived in Moscow, and Russia had granted them asylum on humanitarian grounds. The source also noted that Russian officials were in contact with representatives of the armed Syrian opposition, whose leaders had guaranteed the security of Russian military bases and diplomatic facilities in
