Tehran Expects Relations With Damascus to Continue on Basis of Common Interests
MOSCOW (Sputnik) - Syrian armed groups captured the capital of Damascus on Sunday. Syrian Prime Minister Mohammad Ghazi al-Jalali said that he and his cabinet had decided to remain in Damascus. Russia's Foreign Ministry said that Syrian President Bashar Assad had stepped down and left Syria after negotiations with some participants of the conflict.
Iran expects that its relations with
Syria will continue on the basis of common interests and international legal obligations following the collapse of the government in Damascus, the Iranian Foreign Ministry said on Sunday.
"The relationship between the Iranian and Syrian nations has deep historical roots and has always been friendly. It is expected that this relationship will continue with a wise and forward-looking approach by both nations, based on mutual interests and adherence to international legal obligations," the ministry wrote on X.
Tehran will "spare no effort to help establish security and stability in Syria," for which purpose it will continue consultations with all influential parties in the region, the ministry said.
Moreover, the Iranian Foreign Ministry said that a solution for Syria's future requires an immediate end to military conflicts, the prevention of terrorism, as well as the start of a national dialogue that includes all parts of society.
"Achieving this requires the immediate cessation of military conflicts, prevention of terrorist activities, and the initiation of national dialogue involving all segments of Syrian society to establish an inclusive governance structure that represents all Syrians," the ministry added.
Only the people of Syria, free from
foreign interference, should determine the future of their country, the ministry stressed.
"The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Islamic Republic of Iran, considering recent developments in Syria, reiterates Iran's principled stance on respecting Syria’s unity, national sovereignty, and territorial integrity, emphasizing that determining Syria’s future and making decisions about its destiny are solely the responsibility of the Syrian people, without any destructive interference or external imposition," the statement read.
