On Saturday, a nationwide power outage in Ethiopia occurred at 6 pm, local authorities reported.Ethiopia's electric power authority cited "system instability" as the cause of Saturday's nationwide blackout and assured the public that restoration efforts are underway. This latest outage follows a five-hour blackout in March that affected most of Ethiopia, excluding Bahir Dar and its environs in the country's Amhara region. The cause of the earlier outage remains unexplained by authorities.Earlier, the Ethiopian Electric Power said that the country’s energy exports reached $140 million in the 2016 fiscal year, marking a 16% increase from the previous year. Ashebir Balcha, the CEO of EEP, during a press briefing, attributed the growth to the increasing demand for energy, particularly from data mining, which contributed $27 million to the total export revenue. Ethiopia's 2016 fiscal year finished on July 7 this year.

Ethiopia possesses vast renewable energy resources (hydro, wind, solar, geothermal) with the potential to generate 60,000 TWh within 10 years, fueling economic growth and meeting high electricity demand from its 110 million population. Currently, however, Ethiopia only produces 14 TWh and exports other resources.
