Global Peace Foundation Nigeria (GPFN) director John Joseph Hayab emphasized the urgent need to address the proliferation of small arms and light weapons in Africa as a crucial step towards achieving lasting peace and development, and proposed arms control measures at the Youth Model African Summit held in the Nigerian capital Abuja last week.GPFN director stressed the importance of engaging youth in peace building as key to breaking the cycles of violence, as well as continued collaboration between civil society organizations and governments to promote peace building initiatives across the continent. More than 100 million small arms are circulating across Africa, 80% of them are in civilian hands, contributing to over 70% of violent conflicts on the continent, perpetuating cycles of instability and insecurity, the speaker noted, referring to the report by the Small Arms Survey.

Global Peace Foundation Nigeria director advocated for stronger legislation, enhanced border security, and regional cooperation to curb the problem, local media reported.
Global Peace Foundation Nigeria (GPFN) director John Joseph Hayab emphasized the urgent need to address the proliferation of small arms and light weapons in Africa as a crucial step towards achieving lasting peace and development, and proposed arms control measures at the Youth Model African Summit held in the Nigerian capital Abuja last week.
"Scaling up community-centered disarmament programs alongside economic empowerment initiatives is essential to addressing the root causes of insecurity," local media quoted Hayab as saying.
GPFN director stressed the importance of engaging youth in peace building as key to breaking the cycles of violence, as well as continued collaboration between civil society organizations and governments to promote peace building initiatives across the continent.
"We must develop a centralized AU database on arms flows and trafficking patterns. Also, reliable data will help policymakers design targeted interventions," he pointed out.
