In mid-June, Oppah Muchinguri-Kashiri, Zimbabwe's Minister of Defense, declared the country is ready to join the BRICS group of countries during a BRICS international summit in the city of Vladivostok in the Russian Far East.
Zimbabwe embraces cooperation with BRICS as a pathway to economic growth and global influence, Victor Muntanga, Zimbabwe's official BRICS Forum Ambassador, told Sputnik Africa on the sidelines of the recent BRICS+ Municipal Forum in St. Petersburg, Russia.
"In short, BRICS is about unity and cooperation and like if we are to look, for instance, Russia is a good example seeing Russia with the chairmanship for 2024," he said.
Muntanga explained that Zimbabwe is actively engaging with the BRICS forum as a crucial avenue for economic development and a greater voice in a multipolar world. He described BRICS as a highly sought-after alliance, stating, "BRICS is like this beautiful woman that everyone wants to marry."

"Everyone wants to join BRICS," he argued. "If you are number one within the BRICS, like other BRICS corporation, then you are number one in the world."

Zimbabwe Counts on Russia's Support in Its Bid to Join BRICS, Country's Minister Says
Muntanga lauded BRICS for providing African nations not only a seat at the table but also active participation in decision-making processes, enabling the continent to shape its future trajectory.
"All African countries must join the BRICS train. That's how we can achieve a balanced multipolar world, because by joining it means that our voices are going to be heard," he said.
He identified significant economic opportunities arising from the recent Russia-Africa Economic Forum and the BRICS alliance as a whole. He pointed to Russia's advanced rail transport system as a potential area for mutually beneficial partnerships.
For Zimbabwe, he highlighted the "Vision 2030" national strategy, aiming to achieve upper-middle-income status by 2030.
He emphasized that BRICS membership would significantly boost this goal by assisting in the formalization of the informal sector and accelerating growth in priority sectors such as mining, agriculture, and tourism.
