The Emergence Institute annually assesses countries' progress toward economic emergence using the Synthetic Economic Emergence Index (ISEME), a methodology developed by Senegalese economist Moubarack Lo that measures inclusive wealth, sustainable growth, structural transformation, and global integration.
Morocco, Egypt, South Africa, and Mauritius lead Africa in the ISEME, demonstrating progress in key economic indicators, which makes them "emerging" countries.
The African countries classified as "pre-emerging" are:

Botswana
Equatorial Guinea
