The Southern African Development Community will convene next Wednesday in Harare, the capital of Zimbabwe, to review the security situation in the region, with focus on the situation in the Eastern part of the Democratic Republic of Congo, the statement said. The Zimbabwean President and current SADC Chairperson, Emmerson Mnangagwa, will preside over the summit. The SADC Mission in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (SAMIDRC) will provide a report to the summit on its progress. Before the summit, Samia Suluhu Hassan, Tanzanian President and Chairperson of the Extraordinary SADC Organ Troika Summit, will preside over the Extraordinary SADC Summit of Heads of State and Government ahead of the main event. The SADC region deployed the SAMIDRC on December 15, 2023, with a one-year mandate to address the security situation in the DRC and restore peace, security, and stability.Earlier this month, the command of the Armed Forces of the DRC accused militants from the Movement of March 23 group and the army of neighboring Rwanda of repeatedly violating the ceasefire, reached in August this year. The army, however, stated that Congolese troops will observe it. Still, according to reports, escalation of violence in the region persists.
