Leaders of the Southern African Development Community (SADC) gathered in Harare on August 17 for the 44th Summit of the regional bloc. During the event, they handed over the SADC chairmanship to Zimbabwe.
President Emmerson
Mnangagwa of Zimbabwe has expressed gratitude to his fellow SADC leaders for their continued support as Zimbabwe assumes the chairmanship of the regional bloc.
Addressing the SADC Heads of State Summit at the new Parliament building in Mt. Hampden, President Mnangagwa highlighted the unwavering solidarity shown by SADC countries despite external pressure to isolate Zimbabwe.
He acknowledged the "undue pressure" exerted on SADC member states, emphasizing their resilience in standing with his nation.
"You have remained resolute in the true spirit of our liberation wartime mantra that an injury to one is an injury to all," he said. "The clarity, solidarity and unity which the SADC region has always demonstrated on Zimbabwe, as with other critical peace, security and climate change disasters in our region, epitomizes the true Pan-African spirit envisaged by the founding fathers of our region."
The President specifically thanked SADC for its support during the past 24 years of Western unilateral sanctions imposed on Zimbabwe due to its land reform program.
