Over the weekend, Zimbabwe's ruling Zanu-PF party organized the 21st National People's Conference under the theme "Industrializing and Modernizing Towards the Attainment of Vision 2030." The event took place in Bulawayo, the second-largest city in the southwest of the country.
The names of the provinces in Zimbabwe should be changed because they refer to the colonial history of the country, a local newspaper said, citing Patrick Chinamasa, Zimbabwean Zanu-PF party Secretary for Legal Affairs, during the Zanu-PF 21st Annual National People’s Conference.
"On liberation war heritage, the party directs the government to accelerate renaming of provinces and do away with colonial names, which divide the nation," Chinamasa said, as quoted by the newspaper.
In addition, the secretary of the party said that it’s necessary to protect the memory of people who liberated the country in the previous century.
"We enjoin the government to expedite the vetting of outstanding war veterans of the liberation struggle […] The party also directs the government to establish provincial museums to preserve the memories of the liberation struggle coupled with an autobiography center," Chinamasa said.
Zanu-PF's Annual National People’s Conference, held in Bulawayo over the weekend, resulted in several key resolutions that are intended to guide government policies and initiatives in line with the party's vision of a modernized and industrialized Zimbabwe by 2030. The resolutions include providing free healthcare services for the elderly, minors, and people with disabilities, implementing measures to strengthen the Zimbabwean currency, ZiG, etc.
