Mnangagwa has reaffirmed his commitment to upholding the country's constitution, stating that he will not seek to extend his term beyond 2028, according to Patrick Chinamasa, the ruling ZANU-PF party's secretary for legal affairs.
This comes despite a proposal from members of the ZANU-PF party to extend his tenure to 2030.
Speaking during the ZANU-PF National Annual People’s Conference on Saturday that President Mnangagwa had personally assured him of his adherence to the constitutional term limits.
"His Excellency said he had a hand in crafting the current Constitution […] I met him three times, and he said he has no wish to extend his mandate beyond 2028," Chinamasa told the audience.
