The unprecedented floods affected four million people in West and Central Africa. They have caused hundreds of deaths and extensive damage to crops. The most affected countries are Nigeria, Chad, Mali, Guinea, Niger, Cameroon, Ghana, and Liberia.
The flooding began in the northern part of the country, where the Senegal River overflowed its banks on the border with Mauritania, affecting the cities of Kayes, Kidira, Bakel, Matam and Podor, read the statement by the Senegal River Basin Development Authority (OMVS), which brings together Guinea, Mali, Mauritania, and Senegal with the aim of reducing the vulnerability of the economies of its member states to climatic hazards.
The flows recorded in recent days are comparable to those observed during the exceptional floods of 1999. The Manantali dam, which plays a crucial role in flood regulation, is currently at its maximum operating level, the OMVS added.
The evacuation of people from the affected settlements has already begun. Residents of Kidira, a town of 11,000 located 650 km east of the Senegalese capital Dakar, are leaving their homes, media reported.
According to recent reports, weeks of heavier-than-usual seasonal rains, exacerbated by the El Niño weather pattern, have wreaked havoc across much of Africa, causing hundreds of deaths, widespread displacement, and damage to agriculture that threatens the continent's food security.
