The Grand Egyptian Museum (GEM) has officially opened its doors on Wednesday, offering the world an unprecedented glimpse into the rich history of Ancient Egypt. Most of the artifacts will be displayed at the museum in a 4,000-square-meter permanent exhibition, which corresponds to almost four soccer fields. As the largest museum dedicated to a single nation's antiquities, the GEM houses nearly 100,000 relics, including the iconic ship of Khufu and treasures from King Tutankhamun's tomb.Sputnik's correspondent in Egypt was among the first to tour the Grand Egyptian Museum. The museum proposal was designed by Dublin-based Heneghan Peng Architects at the request of the Egyptian Ministry of Culture. The building covers an area of 90,000 square meters in a 50-hectare area, making it the largest museum in the world. This title was previously held by the Louvre in Paris, which covers an area of 73,000 square meters. Its design carefully considers the lighting, display cases, visitor services, and structural integrity to provide a world-class experience.Egypt has invested significantly in this monumental project, ensuring that the GEM is equipped with the latest technology and offers a state-of-the-art environment for showcasing its priceless artifacts.
