In October alone, four states announced their interest in joining BRICS. Overall, as stated by the Russian president, 34 countries are interested in joining the bloc in some capacity. Sputnik offers an overview of BRICS's composition and its economic and demographic indicators based on the latest data from the UN, the World Bank, and BRICS itself.
Founded in 2006, BRICS has steadily expanded its membership over the years. Initially comprising Brazil, Russia, India, and China, the organization welcomed South Africa in 2010, becoming BRICS. By 2024, five new members—Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, Saudi Arabia, and the UAE—joined the ranks, bringing the total to 10 countries, with three African nations now represented.
The BRICS economies together contribute nearly a third of the world’s total GDP, underscoring the bloc’s growing economic influence on a global scale. The countries within BRICS also represent over 45% of the world’s population, making it one of the largest global economic and demographic groups.
