In Burkina Faso, food security and poverty reduction remain challenges. The World Bank estimates that 3.5 million people, or 20% of the population, face food insecurity. The majority of Burkinabe rely on subsistence farming, with a smaller percentage engaged in higher-value, market-oriented agricultural production.
Food self-sufficiency "will be a reality in Burkina Faso," said a local governor, predicting a promising agricultural campaign.
The country's northern region is expected to provide more than 500,000 tonnes of products, according to an official estimate made on October 11 after the governor's visit to two agricultural sites.
Issouf Ouédraogo went to the commune of Ouahigouya to "inquire about the implementation of the agro-pastoral and fisheries offensive" launched by the head of state, specifies the governorate's press release.
