MOSCOW (Sputnik) - BRICS (Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa) is an intergovernmental association created in 2006. Russia has held the chairmanship of the organization since January 1, 2024. Since the start of 2024, Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, and the UAE have joined BRICS.
The BRICS foreign ministers discussed the creation of the category of partner states at a meeting in New York, US, and Brazil presented the main outlines of its presidency of the association in 2025, the Russian Foreign Ministry said.
"In the context of the preparation for the BRICS summit in Kazan on October 22-24, current issues of interaction in the association format were considered, including the creation of the category of partner states. The Brazilian side presented the main outlines of its BRICS chairmanship in 2025," the ministry said in a statement.
It said the ministers discussed maintaining peace and security, global economic stability, and sustainable development.

"The commitment to increase coordination in the BRICS format at international venues was reaffirmed," the ministry said.
Russia's chairmanship of BRICS is held under the motto of strengthening multilateralism for fair global development and security.
