UNITED NATIONS (Sputnik) - BRICS, established in 2009 as a platform for major developing economies (Brazil, Russia, India, China), expanded to include South Africa in 2010. The group further expanded on January 1st, welcoming Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, and the UAE. Saudi Arabia, while not formally a member, has been participating in BRICS meetings.
BRICS is an attractive organization to numerous countries, Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto told RIA Novosti.

"We should learn from BRICS, because BRICS is attractive to many countries, and it is receptive to new members," Szijjarto said in an interview. "Why isn’t the European Union the same way?"
